Students

Eligible students who would like on-campus parking must apply for parking in advance each semester (excluding the summer terms). Students will be notified via email when parking applications are available, and those dates will also be published on this page. Eligibility to apply does not guarantee that you will be assigned a permit.

Student Eligibility

Students living on campus who have fewer than 60 cumulative credit hours earned and on file with the Office of the Registrar at the time that assignments are made are not eligible to apply for College parking.

Students who are eligible to apply for parking will be assigned parking based on the number of cumulative credit hours earned and on file with the Office of the Registrar at the time that assignments are made. In the event of identical credit hours earned, applications received first will have priority.

Eligible resident students living at a qualifying campus residential address (an even-numbered, CofC-assigned Bull Street house) may request on-street residential parking (CR).

Eligibility to apply does not guarantee that you will be assigned a permit. Because of the fluctuating demand from semester to semester, no student is guaranteed the right to purchase a parking permit.

Please note: We were able to expand parking eligibility in 2020-2021 due to the unusual circumstances related to COVID, but, for fall 2021, students living on campus will again need to have earned 60 credit hours at the time assignments are made.

Fall 2021 Parking Applications: Early Registration

The applications for fall 2021 parking permits will be available through MyCharleston beginning 4/13/2021 for early registration. Early registration is for returning, currently enrolled students only. Students received instructions for the application process via their CofC email address.

The April application process (called early registration) is for currently enrolled/returning students only; eligible transfer students, new graduate students, and new non-resident freshmen will be eligible to purchase permits anytime during or after our first come, first served sale, which will take place on or after Friday, 8/6/2021. This date is subject to change.

Please note: If you currently reside in campus housing and have fewer than 60 cumulative credit hours, you will not be able to apply for your permit until your grades have posted in May. You will be able to apply for parking the day after your grades post provided that MyCharleston shows you having 60 or more hours at that time.

Fall 2021: First Come, First Served Sale

Eligible transfer students, new graduate students, commuting freshmen (freshmen who do not live in campus housing), and qualifying returning students who missed the application and/or payment deadline(s) will be eligible to purchase permits during our first come, first served sale beginning on or after 8/6/2021. Please watch your College of Charleston email account for further information.

Alternative Parking

If you are interested in securing parking through a source not affiliated with the College of Charleston, please click here for a listing of Alternative Parking spaces leased to students.

Alternatives to Parking on Campus

Commuting students who do not have parking permits may want to check out the HOP Shuttle. Park-and-ride from Morrison Drive for a flat all-day fee of just $5. Daily parking rates at the garages around campus can cost up to $18 per day, so the HOP park-and-ride option represents a significant savings over parking in the core of campus. For more information about the HOP Shuttle, click here: HOP Park-And-Ride.

Commuting students can also avoid having to drive downtown at all by taking advantage of the CARTA Express routes. CARTA Express is free to students; all you need to do is show your Cougar Card to the driver upon boarding the bus. Click on the links below for more information about the CARTA Express routes and times:

Resident students are also encouraged to take advantage of CARTA bus services. Students can ride regular CARTA routes and the Airport Express route for free simply by showing their Cougar Card to the driver upon boarding the bus. For more information about CARTA routes, visit the CARTA Maps and Schedules website.

Available Parking And Fees – Maymester And Summer I And II 2021

(This calendar is subject to change as the College responds to COVID-19.)

Taking summer classes? Here’s what you need to know about purchasing a summer parking permit.

  • There is not an application period in advance of the summer terms. All permits will be sold at the Campus Services HQ office beginning Monday, May 10, 2021, at 8:30 a.m. We never sell out of summer permits, and we rarely sell out of any particular lot or garage over the summer. If you do not need your summer permit as early as 5/17/2021 (the effective date for Summer 2021 permits), you may purchase it any time after 5/10/2021 without concern that we will be sold out of spaces in the core of campus.

  • Summer permits will be valid beginning on the first day of Maymester, which is Monday, May 17, 2021. Summer permits expire on the last day of Summer II exams, which is Wednesday, August 11, 2021.

  • Unlike the spring and fall semesters, there is no minimum number of earned credit hours required to be eligible to purchase a summer permit.

  • The cost for a summer permit covers all three summer terms: Maymester, Summer I and Summer II. If you do not need the permit for all three terms, you will be eligible for a pro-rated refund if you purchased the permit in advance of Maymester or Summer I and return it prior to the Summer II term, OR you will be charged a pro-rated price if you purchase the permit for one or both of the summer terms, after the conclusion of the Maymester term. To return your permit for a pro-rated refund, you must peel the permit off of your vehicle and bring it with you to Campus Services HQ. Refund checks are issued by the Controller’s Office and usually take 2-3 weeks to process.
